We’ve lost many great people in recent years, including jazz preservationist and radio host, Phil Schaap. He died on September 7, 2021. Schaap grew up as an insider of the jazz scene, and was a friend to a good number of jazz musicians including drummer, Papa Jo Jones. His website philschaapjazz.com which contains his extensive radio broadcasts, is still up and running, but for how long? The site is an online treasure, and will hopefully be preserved for future posterity. Schaap’s legacy lives on in the form of his website, his many writings, and Swing University, an extension of Jazz at Lincoln Center. -FSC |
