Rumba Kings Documentary

There are numerous figures who helped to inspire the creation of this website and it’s safe to say /GR wouldn’t exist without the Rumba Kings, the pioneers of Congolese music. Suddenly in 2021, the world received a gift in documentary format from Alan Brain and a team of Rumba subject matter experts (not to be confused with Cuban Rumba). I was fortunate to view the film toward the end of the year and it is a excellent representation of the music overall. Many of the main artists are highlighted and the music is always top notch of course. For the uninitiated, this is a solid and quick introduction to the music and the people who made it all happen.

It’s hard to believe that it has taken seventy years for someone to come along and put together a proper English documentary on Congolese Rumba, considered to be one of the most influential music styles in Africa. In my opinion, Congolese artists deserve treatment on the level of Ken Burns’ Jazz documentary miniseries. I can always dream I suppose. Check out the documentary if you can.
